Rosle Onion and Vegetable Chopper Review

Rosle Onion and Vegetable Chopper

Tired of chopping small amounts of onions, garlic, parsley etc. Bought choppers before that did not work. Saw this one and gave it a try. Worked great. I can use it and put it in the dishwasher. After using it, bought a second on for my son that does a lot of cooking also. He also gives it good grades. It is not for chopping a whole onion but when you need a quarter cup or a few tablespoons it is excellent.

Swissmar Peeler Serrated Blade Review

Swissmar Peeler Serrated Blade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Regarding the Swissmar Serrated Stainless Steel Peeler, this one is really a very special peeler, that I discovered by accident when I borrowed it from a family member. I have 4 vegetable peelers that look the same as this one, from a distance. Here is what this peeler does, that no other peeler will do the same: it peels the Kabocha squash! The kabocha squash is basically a Japanese pumpkin which is popular in Southern California around October & November each year. Check it out on-line to see pictures. It ain't a pretty squash; spotty, mottled, and uneven dark olive green peel which looks like the coral reef, but it is smooth and deep beautiful orange on the inside--and get this: when steamed, it can have the consistency of potatoes-- it's a favorite in my family. So back to the peeler, this particular peeler has a serrated knife, and its little teeth grasp onto the tough skin -- a task which all other standard peelers will not do. Just be very careful, because it is very sharp. Before I had this peeler, it took me about 1 hour to peel this pumpkin with a sharp knife, and that was dangerous business too. This peeler cut my job down to 2 minutes of work. Look, I really don't think that this peeler was designed to peel pumpkins, and I am probably testing its limits until it might break one day. Actually, it may very well be intended as a garnishing tool, but I am a practical man, and garnishing is not an everyday task for me.
But this peeler is one fine tool that will create ruffled slices for your garnishing pleasure, as well as easily peel all the vegetables, not just the ones with the tougher skin. Check out the kabocha squash at the market -- its skin is hard like a rock, but if you peel this green pumpkin, cut it up into big cubes, and put spices on it, and simply steam it till just right, you will discover a tasty vegetable (actally technically a fruit) that is an amazing side dish. And the Swissmar Serrated Peeler will allow you to attempt to peel it instead of leaving the skin on during the cooking process. The peeler knife is made of stainless steel, so what else can one ask for? Good luck, be very careful, and see if you are crazy enough to risk breaking a serrated peeler in order to cook some amazing pumpkin for dinner. I am crazy enough to do it, that is for sure. Check it out!

This isn't just another peeler. Proprietary technology from Switzerland has given our Swiss Classic peelers a few new edges. The stainless steel blade is scalpel sharp-which means less effort to peel and a thinner peel with every stroke. The serrated blade peeler is perfect for more delicate fruits and vegetables such as kiwis, mangoes and tomatoes. A side cutter on each peeler removes eyes and blemishes from produce or can cut grooves in fruits and vegetables. Suitable for left and right handed use, dishwasher safe, Made in Switzerland.

Harmony Farms is a small company and I have been feeding their food for a few years now. They use quality ingredients and my dogs have thrived. If I had a minor complaint it would be the food is not always of a consistent texture. Sometimes a little runny but overall happy with product. I feed 1/2 canned and 1/2 of their dry for doggie meals.

Weston Restaurant Quality French Fry Cutter Review

Weston Restaurant Quality French Fry Cutter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having tried any number of wimpy french fry cutters, I finally bit the bullet (premium pricing) and ordered this one.
It is the bomb.
When I opened the box, I was stunned at the durability promised by the quality of the components. The cast iron parts (lever arm, feet and frame) are covered with a nice soft green finish so thick that I can't tell whether it's a really good powder coating or baked enamel. Most important, the cutter heads and their heavy metal frames are strong enough to cut yams with no sign of flexing that might otherwise threaten a broken frame. However, yams may mush up before they will pass through the cutter. I wound up with one yam that yielded only two-inch-long shoestrings, even when I used a series of full-body presses on the armature in trying to force the yam through. Better to use a mandoline and/or a chef's knife for yam fries, I've concluded.
But never fear: potatoes work fine in the Weston, particularly if you've left Russet spuds in a cool dark place for a month or two before cutting. That way, some of their starch will convert into sugars that will make your fries tastier and crisper.
Cutter heads are a snap to change, using three hand turned wing-nuts. The pusher head can be replaced by undoing two large and relatively accessible Phillips-head screws. Another great feature is the availability of important optional accessories, like different size cutter heads and huge suction cups that attach to all four feet for a great grip on granite counter tops. These suckers are even made of a green rubber that matches the color of the frame.
Nobody's perfect, nor is this product. The suction cup feet are attached by poking protruding bolts through the feet of the cutter and screwing on their locknuts. Trouble is, the bolts I got were too short to rise above the holes in the feet. I solved that one by shaving an eighth of an inch disk off of the top of each suction cup using a paring knife, to make the bolt protrude far enough for the nut to "grab."
Other problems were a bit more vexing. The two screws that held the pusher plate to my machine were tightened to the point where the thick lockwashers behind them had totally flattened out. These folks must have gorillas working on their assembly line. It took a brace and bit to loosen the screws to the point where I could remove them and replace the pusher head. Also, proper assembly of the unit called for the use of a couple of wrenches to properly tighten the bolts holding the armature in place.
Big deal. This product is a joy to use, really does work splendidly with spuds up to six inches long, is easy to operate and clean up when done. If you can afford it, accept no substitutes.

We will be ordering a more than one. Just love it. Warning, it is very sharp, but man does it work.

Zyliss Easy Slice Mandolin, White Review

Zyliss Easy Slice Mandolin, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this mandoline to replace a ten-year-old Boerner V-slicer which I though was getting a little dull and now I'm glad I didn't throw the old one away. I use a mandoline to get consistently thin, thin slices, and the Zyliss doesn't get the job done. Cutting with the .75-mm insert yields slices that vary between paper-thin and 1/16 of an inch thick -- a very long way from .75mm. I suspect the plastic used in the frame and insert is just too flexible or too poorly supported to provide thin slices every time.
In addition the rail-guide system is cumbersome and makes it very difficult to position food for slicing.
In short, for me, this product was a waste of money and the only product I've ever ordered from Amazon that I wish I could send back.
Buy a Boerner V-slicer instead: its a better slicer and it costs...less!

Sojos Grain-Free Dog Food Mix Review

5 stars, 10 if it were possible.
2 mini-doxies who ate homemade from birth to 2, then went onto 'natural' kibble (Holistic Blendz, Hund n Flocken) and developed urine crystals, then went to a vet kibble that got rid of the crystals but developed another crystal. I needed a solution that wouldn't take all day to prepare, and without grain (dachshunds are better off with potatoes as their starch, no rice or corn). First impressions - smells good helped by garlic and oh look! I can actually recognize the bits of potato, broccoli and carrots! - add water, so far pretty easy. Add beef? I can't bring myself to do the raw thing, but I get organic ground beef from Costco, poach it, and when it's cooled down I add it to the Europa. Store 3-4 days worth in the frig, and it's done. Doggies used to sniff at the kibble and swallow enough of it to sustain life. Now they can't wait to eat. They're down to healthy weights, which is key for doxie backs, and the vet proclaims the smooth is the "best looking dachshund" he has ever seen. They're running and playing like puppies at the ripe old age of 7. I give them Missing Link Plus supplements, Cosequin DS to keep joints in good shape. I feel like I'm doing a good thing for them, and I want them around me for many more years to come. I can't thank Sojourner Farms enough for understanding the need for grain-free food, let alone the absolute purity of preparation and ingredients. Someone there actually thought about the dog first. I'm sure it takes longer to prep and dehydrate the vegetables than to pulverize and kibble-ize something far less healthy, but Sojos is doing it anyway and I for one am grateful for the product. Costly? I can't even calculate the value when I see the difference it has made in my dogs after just 2 months. They ship it free from the Sojos web site, and so does Amazon. Friends, just do it. You can make it in the time it takes you to cook supper. You'd do it for your kids. And your dogs don't talk back!!

I got two of these when buying onions last year. I gave my sister one and realized I needed another so I found them here. Two minutes each in microwave and you have cooked onions to add to steak or pork chops. Not as good tasting as fried but good enough to save the added grease and time cooking. I use most when onions are too sharp and need to be sweetened.

Massive 8-inch Heads Won't Bolt in the Heat!
Great for freezing, too -- which is good, because with yields like this, you're going to need lots of storage!
57 days from setting out transplants. Packman isn't playing around -- you'll get enormous yields of giant 8-inch heads from these vigorous plants, plus plenty of smaller heads from robust side-shoot production! The delicious medium-to-small beads are densely-set on these domed heads, which extend above the foliage on the plant -- the easiest ever to harvest! But the best thing about Packman Hybrid is its ability to withstand heat. If you live in a warm area -- or just run a little late getting out your spring crop -- Packman is the broccoli you need!
The worst problem most gardeners have with broccoli is being able to eat it all! A dozen or so plants will feed your family for the season, so you might want to plan successive plantings (or buy a bigger freezer!) A cool-weather crop, it can be grown in spring and fall everywhere, and even in winter in mild-weather areas. Sow seeds directly or transplant into the garden when they have 4 true leaves (about 8 weeks from germinating). Before planting, prepare the soil well, adding nitrogen if necessary and neutralizing heavily alkaline or acid soils. If planting in spring, plan to harvest before the temperature reaches 80 degrees; the heads will bolt in high heat. If planting in fall, start 10 to 12 weeks before first frost date. Space seeds or transplants 18 inches apart in rows 2 feet apart. Harvest the central head first, which will stimulate the production of numerous side-shoots and extend your harvest another few weeks.

Jamie Oliver All purpose 3-in-1 Peeler Review

Jamie Oliver All purpose 3-in-1 Peeler
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was given this and the flavor shaker for Christmas. Neither item worked as advertised. The peeler has a very thin metal tip that bends easily - so it usually only peels a very thin piece of the potato. Which means I have to work and work to get a full potato peeled. And because the metal was so flimsy, it wouldn't go in any grooves of the potato at all - those had to be hand done carefully. I ended up throwing it away and using the more reliable Oxo.
The shaker is another story - never worked right. The seal came right off and it would never close fully. I might as well have grabbed my spice rack and dumped it all over the floor in mad abandon - because when the top comes off the shaker, everything goes everywhere.
That's it for me and Jamie Oliver sponsored products. Clearly, he's raking in the money and not too worried about quality.

Fagor 670040230 Stainless-Steel 3-in-1 6-Quart Multi-Cooker Review

Fagor 670040230 Stainless-Steel 3-in-1 6-Quart Multi-Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using my Fagor 3-in-1 multi-cooker for a few months now and have really enjoyed it. I've tried all 3 functions. For the rice cooker function, I like it but the rice comes out a little stickier than we're used to. I've tried cutting back on the amount of water and that seems to help. But I typically just use my old rice cooker because the multi-cooker is already in use making the main dish. For the slow cooker function, it seems to cook at a slightly lower temperature than even the low setting on regular slow cookers. The food gets done, but meats aren't as "falling apart" as they are in my old slow cooker. But maybe that's a good thing since they're not overcooked. Depending on what I'm making, sometimes I use the multi-cooker and sometimes I use my old one. The multi-cooker is 6 qts, but is taller and has a smaller diameter than most slow cookers. So it wouldn't work well for a big flat piece of meat like a brisket. Also, the multi-cooker is teflon coated, so if I'm making something that I will need to use my immersion blender on, I use my old slow cooker with the corning-ware insert. Another small problem with the multi-cooker is that even though the insert is removable, it's not very good for putting the ingredients in the night before and putting in the fridge until you're ready to cook. There's no handles to grab it by and there's no lid just for the insert. Because there are no handles, it's also very difficult, and dangerous, to lift it out after cooking to pour the food into a serving dish. The function I was most nervous about was the pressure cooker. I had never had a pressure cooker before and had visions of horror remembering my mother's and grandmother's disasters. But honestly, once I learned to trust the multi-cooker, it's been great. I didn't know how long it would take to reach pressure, so I would get nervous that it wasn't closed right. But it was fine. You just need to add about 20 minutes to your estimated prep time for it to get up to pressure and start cooking. I was concerned about the 9 psi pressure after reading the other reviews here. I sent an e-mail to Fagor customer service and they actually sent me a page from Miss Vickie's web site that said you need to increase the cooking time by 40% and that you shouldn't use anything less than a 15 psi cooker. I couldn't believe they would send me something that says not to use their product! But it was all the customer service people could offer. Well, it turns out Miss Vickie's web site is wrong. You don't need to increase the cooking time at all, or just a minute or two if it's a long-cooking recipe. The problem is that Miss Vickie based her calculation on the ratio of the pressures (9 being 40% less than 15). But pressure isn't doing the cooking, temperature is. And the ratio of the temperatures is less than 10%. And if you use absolute temperature (according to my engineer husband) the ratio is even less, about 1%. So for a recipe that cooks 10 minutes you would increase it by a few seconds. So now I just use the recommended times in recipes and everything has come out perfectly cooked. I should add that this multi-cooker does not come with a steamer insert, and many pressure cooker recipes, especially for vegetables, require one. It doesn't even seem that Fagor offers one separately. I really like the browning function. It gets very hot and is useful not only for browning ingredients at the beginning but also for getting things boiling at the end of slow cooking so that you can add thickeners like cornstarch or roux. The warming function is nice, too. I've used the cook delay once or twice, but only for an hour or two. Longer would be risky for bacterial growth. So I really like this appliance. I don't think I'll be getting rid of my rice cooker or slow cookers, but they've moved to the basement and the Fagor 3-in-1 multi-cooker has the prize spot on the kitchen counter.
Note: Since writing this comment over a year ago, I have found this silicone vegetable steamer and it works perfectly as a trivet for this pressure cooker. It has firm legs which hold it above the liquid. They were strong enough to hold 4 pounds of brisket. It worked beautifully and cleaned up very nicely.
Chef'n Sleekstor VeggiSteam 8-1/2-Inch Silicone Steamer, Arugula
And I should add that I still love my Fagor 3-in-1 and use it several times a week. I still mainly use it for the pressure cooker function, though. I've found that I really don't need a slow cooker anymore.

An exceptionally versatile addition to any busy kitchen, this 6-quart multi-cooker offers a variety of functions all in one handy appliance--use it as a rice cooker, a pressure cooker, or a slow cooker. In rice-cooker mode, the unit automatically cooks any type of rice to light, fluffy, restaurant-quality perfection. In pressure-cooker mode, the appliance offers high (9 psi) and low (5 psi) pressure settings for cooking healthy meals in no time. The higher the pressure the faster the results. For peace of mind, the unit's self-locking lid comes with an automatic pressure-release setting, which means the lid won't open until all the pressure inside gets safely released. In slow-cooker mode, the appliance can be used to make delicious pot roasts, soups, and stews. Simply add the ingredients in the morning, set the timer, and dinner will be ready and waiting after a long day at the office. Best of all, the multi-cooker automatically shifts to "keep warm" at the end of any cooking program, keeping food hot and ready to serve without overcooking. Other highlights include a "brown" function for true one-pot cooking, an LED screen with soft-touch control buttons, a programmable eight-hour delay timer, stay-cool handles, overheat protection, and two independent pressure-control valves for added security. When finished, the nonstick cooking pot can be removed for quick cleanup by hand or in the dishwasher. A user manual with 40 delicious recipes comes included. Omega Juicer Model O2 Review

Omega Juicer Model O2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did SO much research on the Internet before finding that there are 2 small juicers available, and that both get good reviews. One is this one and the other is the L'equip mini. This model is newer so it didn't have as many reviews, so I couldn't decide. I called up one of the Internet sites and asked which they suggested. They said that Omega has a great reputation and stands by their products better than the other company. If you read the reviews of the L'equip 221 you'll see that that company is horrible if you have a problem with your juicer.
I just got the juicer today. You can get free shipping, so shop around.
Pros:
QUIET (much quieter than my blender), EFFICIENT, EASY TO CLEAN, EXTREMELY WELL BUILT
Juicer is GREAT!! It comes assembled and you can rinse out the parts and try it out in like 5 minutes.
From my research I knew that dry pulp shows it's an efficient machine, and that frothy juice is a negative - from supposed oxidation. I'd call it oxygenization, since air gets into the juice from being centrifuged.
Anyway, my own pulp test was fine. My first juice batch had moist pulp but when I pushed the veggies into the chamber more lightly the pulp was surprisingly dry.
Put a plastic bag, like the kind you put your veggies in, into the pulp catcher as a liner and you'll reduce your mess by a lot. The thing disassembles quickly and easily. I use a veggie brush to clean the screen and the whole thing cleans up in like 5 minutes. The messiest thing for me was the inside of the plastic top.
There was a little froth on the top of the juice, but nothing more than you get at a juice stand, and I'm not sure I believe this is a problem anyway.
The parts are very solid. The mesh filter basket is well built and the blade is very thick and solid, especially compared to food processor blades. The bowl is also stainless.
Highly recommend. Solid build, dry pulp when you get the right technique, and Omega stands by its products.
MAY BE CON:
Not sure about the froth issue. It didn't seem very frothy to me, but if you're used to the classic Champion juicers it may be more than you've had before. I'm just an inexperienced juicer and can't really tell whether this thing makes a lot or a little. Doesn't seem like a lot to me but I have nothing to compare it to.
