Good4U® 6 - tray Food Dehydrator Review

Good4U® 6 - tray Food Dehydrator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After much debate on buying the Good4U or Excalibur dehydrator, this one won out. I was impressed with the price and design of the unit. I wish I had got the Excalibur, with the problems I have had!
I used it 5 out of 7 days a week for 3 months. It started to make a loud clicking noise to which my husband figured out that the electrical tape holding some wires had come loose. After fixing that, a week later it stopped heating altogether. The heating temp switch also broke. I cook a lot of raw so it was upsetting not know what temp I was dehydrating at.
We have contacted the website and called the company's phone number to no end. Two months later NO ONE WILL CONTACT US BACK. This dehydrator has great potential, but some bugs that need to be worded out before buying. It needs the company to stand behind its guarantee to its registed buyers!
BE CAREFUL when buying this. I wish I would have bought the excalibur, because I now will buy it in addition to this broken one!

This superior blender (which I prefer to regard as a "pummeler" as almost nothing would withstand its deconstruction-efforts) is manufactured in Cleveland from whence only a limited number of superior products originate (Cleveland Clinic being in the same league.) If you're looking for an industrial strength product, practically impossible to intimidate or overload, this would be it. I've had one for over ten years, now; so infatuated with it that I've given them as gifts to friends and lovers on over half-a-dozen occasions. They aren't cheap, certainly, but are worth every penny!

Breville BJE200XL Compact Juice Fountain 1.5-qt. Review

Breville BJE200XL Compact Juice Fountain 1.5-qt.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I was in the market for a juicer, I had 2 in the price range I was thinking about. They were the Breville Compact Juice Fountain and Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer. A friend had let me borrow the Power Juicer, and I really liked it. As I was reading reviews and doing research, I concluded that the Breville was a better choice. So, I went out and bought the Breville.
I made the wrong choice! When I juiced apples, it left chunks of apples un-juiced that were about the size of a quarter. It also sent a good bit of the peal into the pulp area. I also found the juice to be very "gritty" and full of pulp. I was juicing a days worth of juice for my wife and me (about 32 lbs of apples), so I had to stop the machine and clean out the pulp 3 times.
I have since returned the Breville juicer and bought the Jack LaLanne Power Juicer. It works much better. I can juice 32 lbs of apples and never change the pulp catcher (I put a bag in it, so I don't even have to clean that part of the machine. The juice is much cleaner with less pulp. The Breville has a faster RPM motor, but the Power Juicer is every bit as powerful. It juices whole apples easily. You can also get about 4 decent sized carrots in there with no trouble.
All in all, I recommend the Power Juicer over the Breville. If you like a lot of pulp, then you might like the Breville. It is a good juicer for smaller quantities of juice. The Breville is a better looking juicer as far as its styling and color goes, but for me the Power Juicer wins hands down.

New 2010 - Samson 6 in 1 Juicer (Advanced) - GB9004 White - 15 Year Warranty

This juicer is fantastic. I only have those huge juicebar types vs. the little shredder 99$ ones to compare it too, and it blows them both away. A juicebar type omega would be nice if I ... owned a juice bar. But I'm just juicing for two at the most and this little 8 hp baby does the trick. The automatic shut off is a great feature for someone who likes to burn appliances up trying to 'do frozen' because I'm impatient, but I've only managed to kill this one once, with too much frozen corn- I was making Thai fish cakes.
It does not shred to juice, it twists to squeeze out the precious fluid and the hopper lets you control how much 'pulp' aka fiber you want in your juice. I love the engine purr and the squeak of kale as it's pushed through, I just wish I had a black or red one! haha This is a good price for a well warranted product, a great design, easy to clean up (though I don't know about a minute flat or whatever), I usually just rinse the pieces as I take it apart before I even drink my juice.
I primarily use it for juicing vegetables, and while it's tough I still cut my carrots into the size I would give a kid for veggie sticks, broccoli, beets too, the harder veggies need to be sliced up a bit, but i stuff celery whole down the chute, chunks of cabbage, ginger, kale... I will be making nut butter with it, and sausage if I can cope with the skin *shudder*
I love to use the pulp in veggie burgers, extra fiber in meatloaf, carrot cake, makes awesome compost and you can even throw some nuts on top of the dry pulp (run it through twice, sure!), dates, olive oil and have a salad later. Mix it into homemade dog food! No reason just to throw it away...
I can't wait to use my Samson juicer tomorrow morning, just talking about it.
TEN STARS
Pasta, pate, sorbets, spice grinding, and I hear they have a new nozzle for making oil!! I'm getting one...
The only thing that comes close to a hassle is the juicing screen (which does not spin, it's a little stationary cone inside the plastic nozzle that you can trade out for a solid cone for pate, etc). I figured out quickly though that using the little brush (toothbrushs work well when the bristles finally wore down) on the INSIDE of the screen first, then going around the outside of the screen in circular motions is most effective, under a little running water. Everything else if you don't clean it right away (which would be silly) or are running meat through it, can be put in the dishwasher!
I have an older model that looks exactly the same, 10 yr instead of 15 warranty, and they say they've improved some of the pieces.. I can't imagine it being more perfect though!

New Z-Star Manual Portable Wheatgrass Juicer Review

New Z-Star Manual Portable Wheatgrass Juicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am partial to the masticating (rather than spinning centrifugal) juicers for reasons I won't go into here, so I went nuts shopping trying to fit my budget. I looked over this model quite a few times thinking it wouldn't be suitable for more than wheatgrass, or assuming it would be a lot of extra work.
Turns out that it is so easy to use I can't hardly believe more reviewers don't talk about it. Granted I chop the veggies, but to give you a frame of reference it's less effort to turn the handle than to tamp the veggies down the chute, and you have to do that even with an electric (not that either is hard). I could liken the manual/electric usage to driving manual/automatic transmission. I actually prefer this manual over the electric masticating I have used most days. Staying actively engaged makes it go by faster or something.
It is also extremely efficient. I have also used an Omega 8005 and feel like I not only saved money up front, but am spending less on veggies. As a daily juicer, that adds up. It's also lower pulp in the juice and less froth, the first a matter of taste the second a matter of shelf life. If you like the pulp, you can obviously add it back in.
As others have mentioned the pulp wants to drop into the juice container. There are about a hundred ways to easily work around this. My personal favorite is to put something under the container to raise it up a bit, allowing it to slide "out of range." Complaining about that seems to me about as petty as complaining you need an outlet for your toaster. It's really no big deal.
I have been extremely pleased with what it is able to juice. I am growing wheatgrass, but so far have fed it mainly apples, celery, and carrots.
I suspect this is the Green Star or Solo Star or whatever it's called these days with a crank instead of a motor. That is just a guess, based somewhat on the available "conversion kit" for electric model owners. Either way it is a terrific juicer and I'm glad I didn't fork over triple the price for an electric motor.
Update 11 1/2 months after buying:
I finally had something go wrong with this juicer. I was making peanut butter with the plug in the cap and it broke. I jumped on the Tribest web site, found a toll-free number, and in less than a minute I had someone from the company on the phone who replaced the part free of charge. They honored the 1 year warranty with no hassles even though I was pushing the thing pretty hard (I think the rep was surprised I had successfully made as much PB as I had with the plug in). BTW - the peanut butter this makes is amazing. It's actually capable of making creamy peanut butter, just leave the plug out of the front cap. ;)

Excalibur ED2400 4-Tray Food Dehydrator Jerky Maker Review

I left a review for this product back in March but somehow it was moved to another listing. I'll attempt leaving the review again with the hopes of saving another unsuspecting buyer from wasting his/her money:
I don't have a lot of space and thought that this 4 tray dehydrator would be the perfect solution. This thing is JUNK!!! The temperature control is completely inaccurate. On top of that, it only worked about 10 times before the heat failed completely. I tried the reset instructions to no avail. I then called the company and they made some excuse about the "rare" need for fuse replacement. The rep convinced me that it was a fluke and that the machine would most likely never need another fuse. I wanted to protect my investment so decided to chance it. It cost about $20 for the fuse/shipping. Installation instructions were fairly straight forward though it took some hassle to get everything back in place. I used the machine about 8-10 more times before it died again. What a complete waste of money--- I wish I had never purchased this product. I called the company and they offered (at full charge) to send me another fuse or I could send the product to them for repair. The cost to ship there and back plus the outrageous repair fee would equal close to what I paid for the thing in the first place. When you look inside, this thing is built like one of those light-bulb-on-a-battery things you throw together as a kid. That would be a bonus if the parts and repair were priced in accordance. This company knows how to make lots of money. I wish they had the same ambition when it came to making a decent product. I'm going back to the $30 model at my local store. Those round tray versions get a lot of bad mouthing by this company. Maybe that's because they actually LAST and they also cost (for the entire unit) only slightly more than the puny fuse in the Excalibur. Don't fall for the marketing hype like I did. This company does not stand by its product.

This is a pretty solid sprouting system. There are 3 trays, and they allow you to grow a pretty good variety of different sprout mixes at the same time. It's stackable so it doesn't take up alot of space, and it is very easy to grow sprouts. Some of the sprouts my kids aren't big on, but I can't sprout enough lentils! They pick them clean as a snack. I am guessing that's a good thing. :^)

Nesco American Harvest FD-1018P 1000 Watt Food Dehydrator Kit Review

Nesco American Harvest FD-1018P 1000 Watt Food Dehydrator Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Somewhere in my life - I think in Boy Scouts - I developed a taste for beef jerky. Years later, in grad school, I realized I could make it at home, as well as dry fruits and vegetables for snacks, with a magical machine called a dehydrator. At the time I picked up a cheap machine - $24, I think - from Wal-Mart. I was able to make some ground beef jerky, dry some fruits and make my own ground red pepper from peppers I grew in pots in the porch. Soon, the dehydrator lid was cracked, the trays warped, other things got my attention, and forming jerky strips from ground beef was tedious without a jerky gun, so the machine got put up for a number of years.

Six or seven years later, I'm in my career and new house. The interest in making jerky and drying foods is renewed, bolstered by an interest in drying foods for camping. I tried to use the old machine. It's only temperature control was a variable vent on the lid - but you still didn't know what temperature you were drying at. (which can be the difference between safe jerky, and jerky that will make you quite sick) I'm probably lucky I never got sick. The airflow was also quite inconsistent. One end of an item would be overdried, while the other end wasn't dried at all. These things would just ruin entire batches of food. Additionally, there were no drying sheets available for it to make leathers ("fruit roll-ups," but you can also dry things like spaghetti sauce.) I decided to get a better dehydrator.

I researched dehydrators, and found several books and online reviews pointing to the American Harvest (NESCO) Gardenmaster. The FD-1018 and FD-1010 are the same machine, but the FD-1018 includes more trays, more leather sheets, more mesh sheets (a finer mesh than the tray which allows drying of smaller objects, like chopped veggies, without falling through the trays), and a book on drying.

The most important features of this dehydrator are the temperature control (dry veggies at 135-145F, meats at 145-155F), and the fact that it is carefully designed for uniform airflow on every sheet. This last advantage cannot be emphasized enough. With the Gardenmaster, I don't have to worry about moving items around and shuffling trays for consistent results. It's actually pretty amazing how well it works!

The Gardenmaster has been getting a workout making jerkies, fruit leathers, and dehydrating vegetables for taking to camp.

As for choosing the FD-1010 or FD-1018, if you're investing this kind of money, I'd highly recommend going to the FD-1018. The price difference more than made up for the cost of purchasing the additional trays, additional accessories and book separately (at least when I purchased it). You will find that you can EASILY fill a half dozen trays. (I used 5 trays the other night to dry just 2 lbs of ground beef jerky.) You don't want to overcrowd foods. You also get enough leather sheets for all of the trays and enough screens for all of the trays. It's frustrating to find that you have enough trays for your drying task, but only have 2 or 3 screens or sheets. The book HOW TO FRY FOODS by Delong is also included. I intend to cover that in an individual review, but it is a worthwhile book and much more substantial than the directions you'd otherwise receive with a dehydrator.

If you don't want to spend this kind of money until you see how much you'll use it, you may want to try the smaller NESCO FD-50 Snackmaster, which also has temperature control, although it only goes to 145F, which is the minimum for meat. As I said, NESCO seems to know the secret of uniform airflow, and I expect this knowledge to be extended to the FD-50.

Don't try to skimp too much on a dehydrator, or you will pay for ruined food, wasted time and frustration. If it is in your price range, you will no be disappoined with the FD-1018 Gardenmaster.
UPDATE: If you're upgrading to this from a less powerful model, beware that it may dry MUCH faster! I've ruined a couple of batches of jerky - turned REALLY leathery - before I realized I was OVERdrying! Can't leave it drying jerky overnight.

Dry slices of fruit and vegetables, herbs and flowers, and strips of jerky with this easy-to-use dehydrator. The countertop appliance features a patented Converga-Flow drying system that forces heated air up the unit's exterior pressurized chamber (not through the trays), then forces the air horizontally across each individual tray, converging at the center. This process ensures fast and even drying--no flavor mixing and no need to rotate the trays around during operation. Its powerful 1000-watt motor also helps ensure fast drying times for results in hours versus days. Furthermore, its opaque Vita-Save exterior blocks light to retain more of the food's nutrients and vitamins during the drying process. A simple control knob adjusts the heat from 95 degrees to 150 degrees F to accommodate proper drying temperatures, and the base and drying trays can be completely immersed in water for easy cleaning. Accessories include eight trays, eight fruit roll sheets, eight clean-A-screens, original jerky spice and cure, and a 160-page soft-cover How to Dry Foods book by home-economist Deanna DeLong. The book contains lots of recipes, hints, and tips; covers the history, methods, and equipment for drying; and includes sections on fruit, fruit leathers, vegetables, herbs and spices, nuts and seeds, meat, and fish. The dehydrator and jerky maker measures 15 by 15 by 15-5/8 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

OMEGA 8003 WHEAT GRASS MULTIPURPOSE ELECTRIC JUICER/FOOD PROCESSOR/PASTA EXTRUDER Review

OMEGA 8003 WHEAT GRASS MULTIPURPOSE ELECTRIC JUICER/FOOD PROCESSOR/PASTA EXTRUDER
Average Reviews:

I purchased this juicer at least partially out of curiosity. I've had a Champion 25+ years, an Acme for 20, and Breville, L'Equip and Omega centrifugal juicers.
The problem with these centrifugals is that they are awful for leafy greens. The Champion will do leafy greens okay, but I was interested in higher yield. Plus, I do enjoy a shot of wheatgrass and the Champion won't do it at all.
I looked at both twin-gear and single-auger types. Twin-gear juicers are still being developed, so I ended up single-auger. After watching the TriBest infomercial demonstrated by some babe who acted like she was on cocaine, I went to Omega. My Omega centrifugal works flawlessly. I purchased the 8003 over the 8005 or 8006 because I like white appliances.
The 8003 is heavier than it appears in photos. However, it is quite compact, smaller than my Champion. Assembly is quite simple; the auger housing, auger, screen and end cone fit logically and the locking wheels are able to be operated with wet hands. As stated by another reviewer, the feed tube is not large; if one wants to drop whole pieces of fruit in this isn't the juicer for you. This is by far the quietest juicer I've owned.
No, where this juicer excels is with leafy greens. It will happily chomp its way through any green one wants. Unlike the Champion, stringy greens such as celery won't accidentally get wound around the auger. The trick with this juicer is to let the slow-turning auger feed at its own speed, helped with the pusher. BTW if anyone wants to see this juicer in action, go to YouTube and there are several excellent demos. I can run several carrots at a time through the big-mouth Breville; not on this juicer. However, of course, the Breville won't do leafy greens as this one does!
The downside to a white juicer is that carrots and beets can stain. Doesn't bother me, but if that could be a problem, buy the chrome finish one with black peripherals.
I know there has been a model 8006 introduced recently with an auger that's supposed to be several times harder than the melamine one used here. For ~$125 more, I don't see the benefit. I expect the price on the 8006 will drop when the novelty wears off.
If one wants to juice carrots, apples, and other firm fruit, a centrifugal will probably be the juicer of choice. I still use mine for these. However, if one wants to increase leafy greens in one's diet, one of these will definitely fill the bill.

Healthy Juicer - Manual Hand Powered Wheatgrass Juicer - Wheat grass juicer Review

Healthy Juicer - Manual Hand Powered Wheatgrass Juicer - Wheat grass juicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
-----
1. Very compact: It takes less counter/table space than a small plate. Most of the electrics (except the L'Equip mini and the Waring JEX 328) are major space hogs.
2. Very efficient: Masticating juicers extract more juice than the centrifugal models. Perhaps more importantly, they do a better job of crushing tough plant cell walls and releasing enzymes - think minced garlic versus chopped garlic. (Whether or how much added health benefits this results in, depends on what you juice. It's hard to get good info on this, but plant enzymes typically help in breakdown and better absorption of nutrients.)
3. Cheap (Check out their Ebay listing - it's $10 cheaper over there.) If you don't want to drop upwards of $250 on an electric masticating juicer, or aren't sure whether you'll stick to it, this one's worth a try.
4. Easy to clean
Cons:
-----
1. The hopper's a bit small, which means you'll be reloading frequently. This seems to be the trouble with masticating juicers in general (including the electrics), but the Z-star manual juicer (also available on amazon, though at twice the cost) has a somewhat bigger hopper.
UPDATE: see effort section below.
2. As I haven't used this long enough, I can't say how durable it is, though it seems very tough and well-made. (The auger tip and the surface it crushes against are both stainless steel, and all the rest is polycarbonate.)
Juicing effort:
---------------
Turning the handle: Effortless for leafy veggies, very little effort for carrots and firm veggies, provided you cut them into smaller pieces first. Don't expect to be able to throw a whole carrot or radish in. The reviewer that claims that you need to be a weightlifter to turn this thing was funny, but wildly off the mark.
UPDATE: Curiously enough, on trying red cabbage, the juicer groans, esp. with largish pieces. I noticed that the juicing effort is quite sensitive to the size of the pieces - with smallish pieces, not only is less turning effort required, but the produce doesn't need pushing either. This lets you feed and crank the handle at the same time, making the process faster.
All in all, though, this idiosyncracy counts as a negative point, and I'm lowering my rating to 4 stars.
UPDATE 2: When juicing cabbage, drizzle a little bit of olive oil over the chopped cabbage - this completely eliminates the groaning (which happens due to friction between the rubbery leaves and the juicer body).
Cleaning: better than the electrics in this department because of fewer parts and simpler design. Cleanup is a major part of juicing effort, so I count this as a pro.
Cutting: For firm veggies, you'll have to cut them into smaller parts (no perfect julienne required; just a quick, sloppy chop would do.) Even so, this adds a little bit to the effort, so if you primarily want to juice firm veggies, you should look at an electric.
Setup: Very easy (again, from the simpler design).

Healthy Juicer, the affordable manual wheatgrass juicer Features & Specifications The Healthy Juicer is the easiest, most efficient and most affordable manual wheatgrass juicer available Most people know about the extensive health benefits of juicing, but nobody enjoys the process of setting up the juicer and worst of all, cleaning up afterwards. The Healthy Juicer is rugged, efficient, and best of all, easy to use and clean! Designed to handle leafy greens There are two types of juicers on the market today. Centrifugal and masticating (meaning to crush and squeeze). The main benefit of a masticating juicer is that it crushes the fruits and vegetables as opposed to shredding them as your average centrifugal juicer does. This process of crushing and squeezing extracts more juice and also has less heat build up than from the high speed at which centrifugal juicers work, which destroys the enzymes and other vital nutrients. The Healthy Juicer produces a healthier juice! Have you ever tried to juice leafy vegetables such as parsley, spinach or even cabbage in a centrifugal juicer? A good portion of it is wasted and just passes through as these juicers do not have any crushing ability. Vegetables are expensive today, especially organic ones. Why throw your money away by not extracting as much juice and nutrients as possible from them? The specially designed

White Garnishing Machine Spiral Slicer Review

White Garnishing Machine Spiral Slicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this thinking that I could make wonderful angel hair pasta with zucchini. Wrong. The shreds are so fine that they are only good for garnishing. After putting pesto onto the zucchini it turned into mush. I then tried carrots. Carrots are VERY difficult to do. You must put ALL your weight on it and turn. The shreds are great for garnishing a salad but I can do the same thing with a hand shredder that I already have. I tried apples since my kids wanted to play with it and they didn't have the strength to do the carrots. The apples turned into mush.
I am now looking for a horizontal type slicer that I saw in a Japanese store. Don't bother with this one.

Hurom HU-100 Slow Juicer, Snow White Review

Hurom HU-100 Slow Juicer, Snow White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the last four years I've used a centrifugal juicer and always wanted a masticating juicer, but never bought one because I knew some of them had problems juicing fruits, and also that they're very slow.
So, when I saw the advertisement for this "slow" juicer that was fast and which could juice both leafy greens and fruits equally well, I was very excited. I raptly watched the video demonstrations of its capabilities and ordered it promptly. Some of its purported advantages of extremely dry pulp, more juice, little to no foam, etc. have fallen far short of the promises made. I notice no increased amount of juice, the foam is absolutely no less than it was with a centrifugal juicer, and UNLIKE my trusty centrifigual juicer the Hurom does a LOUSY job of juicing greens. Just try to juice a leaf of Kale and you'll find it gets all wound up around the screw that is supposed to be chewing it up. It's a mess! I have to stop, put it in reverse, which makes the top come off, then unplug it, stick my hands down around the screw and try to get some of the stuck kale out. And, if you are going to juice a green like kale, do it last or anything you try to juice afterwards will also get stuck around the screw with the kale and not get juiced.
I have also NOT noticed any less separation than the juice created with my centrifugal juicer. So, that's a bust, too.
On the positive side, here are some things I do like about it better than my centrifugal -- it's blessedly quiet, the juice doesn't spit out at high velocity causing splashing everywhere, also small berries and things like pomengranate seeds are easier to juice since they're not trying to jump back out the top of the juicer like they do with the high-speed velocity of the centrifugal juicer.
So, if this is your first juicer, you'll probably be pretty happy with it. If you're a seasoned juicer and are looking to buy up, however, for the money I think I'd wished I'd gone for the twin auger juicer instead.
Update: I've been using the juicer for a couple of months now and am pretty happy with it. I just make sure I tear some of the larger greens up a bit before feeding them in, and I try to juice them last or right before some other item that will help push them through, like celery.

Excalibur 3900 Deluxe Series 9 Tray Food Dehydrator - Black Review

Excalibur 3900 Deluxe Series 9 Tray Food Dehydrator - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used virtually every dehydrator on the market and even a few home-made versions. Trust me when I say that this dehydrator is the best you can get for the money.
The round tower-type dehydrators are inexpensive for a good reason: they aren't worth it.
-The trays are flimsy and crack too easily.
-The holes on these trays are too big to use with herbs or diced foods, so you must use the mesh inserts.
-You only have about 1/2" of space between trays, so you cannot dry bulky items--like flowers or granola.
-When it comes to fruit leather, the only thing more inefficient than the round shape is the hole in the middle. Yes, I know they come with fruit leather trays, but have you ever tried to store fruit leather pealed off of the tray and rolled up? A shredded mess to begin with and a sticky mess once they've stored for a while.
-With the motor on the bottom any food or juices that fall through the cracks shortens the life of the machine.
-The drying process in these tower-types is not uniform--the bottom trays dry quicker than the top trays, the center dries quicker than the edges.
-Some models have only recently started adding temp controls. Still, it does little good because there is more heat on the bottom than the top.
-The motor is loud--I had one model I had to run on the porch because it was so loud.
The two round models I bought died within a year and a half of use.
The next best dehydrator on the market is the L'Eqip. It is much quieter, comes with a healthy 10yr warranty and has temperature controls. But it is a hybrid with many of the faults of the round models and few of the benefits of the square-shaped Excalibur. It still has a hole in the middle. It still dries unevenly. It has deeper trays but you still can't dry flowers. It still has a motor on the bottom. I have a friend who dried berries in her L'Equip. They leaked on the motor and it died the first summer of use. Now granted, the folks at L'Equip stood by their machine and replaced it for her with no hassle, but how many times do you want your summer-time dehydrating held up while you wait for your replacement to come?
The Excalibur is perfect for anyone who is serious about dehydrating. Here are the features that I like:
-Heat source and fan are in the back, forcing air to distribute evenly throughout the chamber. Other than the way you place the food, there is no reason for uneven drying spots.
-Love the timer. I can set it and leave. It'll turn off automatically whether or not I'm there. That means 'round the clock drying during the height of your summer harvest. Put the food in when you go to bed, wake up to dried food and put another batch in.
-Temp control lets you choose low heats for herbs and flowers, higher temps for fruits and jerky.
-Love the square trays. For fruit leather I line the trays with plastic wrap and spread the fruit puree out. When it's dry I cut the leather into 2" wide strips, roll them up and secure with the tail end of the plastic wrap. The plastic peels off easily when it's time to eat.
-BIG trays--you can pack a LOT of food into this. This is especially important at the height of the summer harvest when there's a non-stop stream of food that needs drying. (This is also the one single thing that is in my negative column--the trays don't fit flat in my kitchen sink, making them a little hard to wash. I solve this by washing them in my outdoor garden sink--old fashioned tubs on a stand. Since I like the big trays, I really shouldn't complain.)
-Mesh liner on all trays. I can dry herbs, diced onions and finely chopped fruits without having it fall to trays below. No food cross-contamination means I can dehydrate more than one thing at a time.
-Removable trays. If I have bulky items--flowers, herbs, granola, etc--I can just remove every other tray and have another 1/2" or more room.
-Makes a great proofing box for sourdough. Also good for culturing yogurt, esp if you like to make it in larger containers. For both sourdough and yogurt, make sure it is covered so that the moving air doesn't dry it out.
-10 yr warranty. I've had mine for almost 15 yrs and it's still going strong. Every year the money I save on herbs alone pays for what it originally cost me. That means this machine has paid for itself 15 times over.
If you're at all serious about dehydrating, don't waste your money like I did--get the best from the get go. That's the Excalibur.
(Written by Ross' wife. He's also happy that I like it so well and have gotten so much good use from it.)

Sojos Grain-Free Dog Food Mix Review

Sojos Grain-Free Dog Food Mix
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
5 stars, 10 if it were possible.
2 mini-doxies who ate homemade from birth to 2, then went onto 'natural' kibble (Holistic Blendz, Hund n Flocken) and developed urine crystals, then went to a vet kibble that got rid of the crystals but developed another crystal. I needed a solution that wouldn't take all day to prepare, and without grain (dachshunds are better off with potatoes as their starch, no rice or corn). First impressions - smells good helped by garlic and oh look! I can actually recognize the bits of potato, broccoli and carrots! - add water, so far pretty easy. Add beef? I can't bring myself to do the raw thing, but I get organic ground beef from Costco, poach it, and when it's cooled down I add it to the Europa. Store 3-4 days worth in the frig, and it's done. Doggies used to sniff at the kibble and swallow enough of it to sustain life. Now they can't wait to eat. They're down to healthy weights, which is key for doxie backs, and the vet proclaims the smooth is the "best looking dachshund" he has ever seen. They're running and playing like puppies at the ripe old age of 7. I give them Missing Link Plus supplements, Cosequin DS to keep joints in good shape. I feel like I'm doing a good thing for them, and I want them around me for many more years to come. I can't thank Sojourner Farms enough for understanding the need for grain-free food, let alone the absolute purity of preparation and ingredients. Someone there actually thought about the dog first. I'm sure it takes longer to prep and dehydrate the vegetables than to pulverize and kibble-ize something far less healthy, but Sojos is doing it anyway and I for one am grateful for the product. Costly? I can't even calculate the value when I see the difference it has made in my dogs after just 2 months. They ship it free from the Sojos web site, and so does Amazon. Friends, just do it. You can make it in the time it takes you to cook supper. You'd do it for your kids. And your dogs don't talk back!!
