Also called finocchio, fennel was introduced from Italy over 100 years ago. This vigorous plant forms medium to large bulbs with sweet, anise-like flavor that is delicious baked or raw in salads. Direct sow outdoors in spring when light frosts are still possible. In milder climates, sow in the fall. Harvesting tips: Harvest leaves or the bulbs before it goes to seed.
