I bought a new De Buyer stainless steel La Mandoline for my wife (the model with 2 horizontal blades [straight and serrated], the 4, 7 & 10 julienne blades and the stainless steel pusher). This product is a complete disappointment and is being returned for a full refund. We tried slicing apples, zucchini, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes. The only semblance of success was with the large diameter, hard food: the apples and potatoes. The large diameter of the food receptacle's sliding base won't hold small diameter food upright, like individual carrots or zucchini, even with the stainless steel pusher's spring-loaded compressor and pins. Soft tomatoes just "smushed" instead of sliced, turning the tomato into nothing more than tomato paste.
From the design point of view, I noticed that the long base along which the food slides before the food comes into contact with the cutting blade completely ends before the food touches the blade, meaning that the most important part of the food -- the portion actually being cut by the blade -- is completely unsupported from underneath at the point at which it comes in contact with the blade (there's a gap)! One solution would have been for the manufacturer to extend the base under the blade to support the food as it's being sliced. This, however, still doesn't address the problem of trying to slice one carrot at a time, standing on end, by trying to slide it through either the straight or the serrated blade. The pusher assembly simply cannot hold a single carrot upright. Loading up the large diameter, sliding food receptacle with enough carrots to prevent them from toppling on their sides then creates too much resistance for either my wife or I to easily push the food through the blade, not to mention that you don't always want or need to slice that many vegetables at one time. Not using the pusher assembly at all then defeats the safety features and puts the cook at risk of serious injury.
This kitchen tool is supposed to make food preparation easier. Instead, it's a real disappointment. I would definitely not recommend it. Instead, I would recommend a sharp chef's knife.
