Mrs. Spudman bought several of these bags and the matching trays for growing lettuce on our deck. If one buys the bags, the trays, and the special growing medium, one has to grow quite a bit of salad fixings just to break even. We used Miracle-Gro potting soil in our bags.
Set up is easy, and the bags do retain water well as promised. The advantage of using bags is the portability and ability to move the bags as the sun shifts. I would not want to use these bags on the deck without the trays underneath them.
So how does our garden grow? We have two of the grow bags on our deck ledge and three rectanglular plastic containers, with reservoirs, bought from Home Depot. I also planted different types of lettuce and spinach in a raised bed out in the yard. Taking visual measurments, I've determined that all of the lettuce plants are growing vigorously and at about the same rate. We've had several salads already using lettuce grown in our salad bags.
Because of the initial expense I would not have purchased these grow bags myself. Now that I have them, I must say that they are convenient and seem to result in good crop production. In each bag we have four or five lettuce plants bunched together.
At the end of the season, I'll empty the bags, putting the used soil in the compost bin. The bags should be easier to store and take up less room than the rigid vinly planters. For those with limited area for growing and limited storage capacity, these bags might be a good choice.

For years now, gardeners in England have made the most of very limited garden space by growing vegetables, greens and herbs in plastic bags placed on steps, patios and landings. Weve made improvements and achieved terrific results — and you will, too! First, our Salad Grow Bags are made of patented, double-layer polypropylene instead of sheet plastic. This felt-like fabric breaths better, so your plants wont suffer from heat build-up, overwatering, or poor aeration. Plus, our fabric air prunes plant roots, resulting in a strong, healthy root system. Weve developed a Grow Bag for many popular crops — shallow for salads, deep for tomatoes, peppers and potatoes. That means less planting mix to buy and better results. Plant a garden anywhere you want!
