I plant these Nantes each year and always get a nice crop of 4-5" slender orange carrots. Nantes carrots have a more blunt tip in contrast to pointed-tip carrots. They are somewhat tricky to plant, so take your time and do it right so you can enjoy really good eating when they ripen in about 2 months. Carrot seeds are very tiny and hard to plant in a row. Some carrot seeds come already taped to a strip, and the strip is "planted" and them watered. This is a bit expensive for me, so I plant the old fashioned way, and here is how I do it: I smoothen the soil row with the palm of my hand, which creates a row about 6 inches wide. Then, I carefully sprinkle the carrot seeds to cover the 6 inch spread throughout the entire row, trying as best as I can to space the carrot seeds as evenly as possible. I lightly cover the row with perhaps at most 1/4 inch of loose soil. If you cover with too much soil, they will not erupt. I then pat the seeds down with my palm to "set" them in the soil, and then water them in. Carrot seeds are slow to erupt, so in order to not "lose" track of where the row is, I place a very thin row of radish seeds throughout the carrot row - perhaps one radish every 3 inches. As the radishes erupt, the row of carrots will be apparent. They will erupt as fine sprouts in about 2 weeks. Thin them as needed and water consistently for even growth. They are harvested in about 2 months. Don't leave them in much longer or the carrot gets fine hair roots on it and gets rather hard. I have learned to write down the day I plant the carrots so I know when to harvest them. When you harvest, use a shovel or fork and lift up the entire 6" row a spade at a time. The carrots will not break this way. If you try to pull them individually, they often break. Carrots grow best in light loamy soil. Heavy soils with clay will produce a more stunted irregular carrot. The taste is quite satisfying. When you eat these Nantes carrots fresh out of the garden, you will never be satisfied with store-bought carrots again.
