Proctor-Silex Rice Cooker and Steamer Review

Proctor-Silex Rice Cooker and Steamer
Average Reviews:

I have had this model for just over a year and it spontaneously died. This is the second rice maker to die after a short time, so the failure is the reason for 2 stars. While it WAS working, it cooked rice just fine. Ours came with a veggie steamer which worked well, just remember to put a little less water for the rice if you make rice along side it as the veggies will add water to the rice.
Aside from the failure this was a good rice maker, if it hadn't failed I'd have rated it 4 stars, because sometimes the cooker would switch spontaneously to warm mode before finishing cooking the rice.

Even though I felt the low price on this cooker was suspect, I thought I would give it a chance. I wasn't expecting it to last long or work well - boy was I wrong!! I have used it several times a week for going on three years now, and it's still working flawlessly - try to say that about, well, probably any other small applicance in your entire kitchen.
Everyone should have a rice-cooker - they're great time-savers, not to mention meal-savers. Even people who can't boil water can make perfect rice every time.
The reasons I love my Aroma cooker in particular are:
1) It makes much less mess than others I've used (rice cookers tend to blurble starchy water around the rim while cooking, but the heavy glass lid of the Aroma, and the vent hole, keep it from spattering the counter)
2) It shuts off automatically when it's done cooking, regardless of the type of rice used (I still have no idea how it "knows" there's brown rice that needs a longer cooking time in there, as opposed to jasmine rice which cooks faster - but it does!)
3) It keeps the rice warm for hours if necessary without burning on the bottom or drying out
4) The inner pot lifts out easily to clean.
If I ever have to replace this little workhorse, I'll definitely replace it with another Aroma. (I hope by then they make one in red!)

I received this rice cooker three years ago as a gift from my mother and it has served me well over the years. It has recently given out, hence my reason for reviewing new ones online, but for the price it did well. I used this rice cooker on the average of two nights a week without any issues at all. I feel strongly that if you are looking for starter appliances for your home, then this would be a good way to go. I now know just how much I appreciate this appliance and I am willing to spend the money on a top of the line model, but like I said, if you are just starting out then this is the one for you.

Hamilton Beach Digital Simplicity Deluxe Rice Cooker/Steamer Review

I've had the unit for about a month and have used it several times for rice and steaming vegetables. There are very nice features on this rice cooker. The choices for cooking are straight forward and easy to use. The steam outlet is handy and doesn't allow liquid to build up around the outside or base of the unit. It cooks both large and small quantities of rice equally well. My main complaint is that the steamer basket is too shallow, and doesn't allow for steaming larger vegetables, like artichokes, broccoli bunches, cauliflower, etc. It would also be nice to have a recipe book that gave a base line for cooking/steaming foods. (I used my old rice cooker's manual as a base line.) Overall, it does what it's supposed to do (cook rice)and does it well. Since it's made in China (like every other small appliance) I worry about it's reliability, but I don't see any other option for that problem. Last note: The warranty is next to worthless: the purchaser is responsible for shipping to and from the manufacturer should anything break or stop working in the first year.

Proctor Silex 37533 10-Cup Rice Cooker, White Review

Proctor Silex 37533 10-Cup Rice Cooker, White
Average Reviews:

I purchased this from Bed Bath & Beyond for $15! That was easily the best $15 I've ever spent on an appliance. I use it solely for cooking natural long grain brown rice, and it has come out perfect every time. It has a non-stick finish so clean up is as easy as it gets. The lid and cooking pot are dish washer safe, but I think you'd have to be pretty lazy not to take a whole 15 seconds to run it under some water. The non-stick works that good!
I usually cook about 1 cup of uncooked rice at a time. The instructions indicate about a 1-2 ratio of rice to water. But, I've found that a 1-1.5 ratio works better. I guess if you like your rice soggy, then use the 1-part rice to 2-part water method.
I saw a rice cooker for $179.99 at BB&B, and I can't imagine it doing any better than my $15 rice cooker. Best rice I've ever eaten.

Zojirushi NHS-18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer & Warmer Review

Zojirushi NHS-18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer and Warmer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent rice cooker but I would like to point out something very important. The directions say specifically that you must wash the rice in a strainer until the water that runs through them comes out clear. This is very important. If you are having problems with the rice bubbling up over the top of the rice cooker and getting on the counter, you probably aren't washing the rice or aren't washing it well enough. Also if you are having problems with a crust on the bottom of the rice, you probably aren't washing the rice or aren't washing it well enough. Start washing your rice and you probably won't see those two problems again. Also the rice comes out much fluffier and less gummy if you wash it.
The reason for this is that, when you get uncooked rice, there is a large amount of excess starch that is stuck to the outside of the rice that gets stuck there when the rice is processes.

Plump moist grains of rice and brilliantly colored flavorful vegetables are yours with this steamer. Steaming not only preserves nutrients, flavors, and colors marvelously well, it also allows you to cook without adding oil or fat. Once your food is cooked it will stay warm until you're ready to serve, eliminating those timing headaches. And last but surely not least, the cooking pan is removable and non-stick, ensuring your precious time isn't spent cleaning up.

Several hours of my life were wasted pondering what rice cooker to purchase. There are dozen options available and I too was originally getting sucked into the though larger price tag =better rice, how wrong I was. Simple, easy to use, affordable and perfect brown rice on the first try (no easy task). Save your money for Vegas, this is all you need.

A complete, healthy, fat-free meal can easily be prepared in this electric rice cooker. The nonstick removable inner pot produces up to 6 cups of cooked rice, while the steaming basket holds enough vegetables or shrimp for one or two hungry people. Simple to operate, the cooker features just one switch and two settings, cook and keep warm. During cooking, a red light is illuminated; when cooking is complete, the switch automatically reverts to the keep-warm setting and a yellow light comes on. Moisture and nutrients are sent back into the cooker by the domed glass lid, which also allows for easy viewing. After cooking, the rice should be allowed to sit for about five to seven minutes before removing the lid. Accessories include a measuring cup and a plastic rice paddle for stirring and serving the rice. The cup, paddle, pot, and steamer all should be washed by hand in hot, soapy water after each use. The rice cooker, including its stay-cool side loop handles, measures approximately 11-1/2 by 8-1/2 by 10 inches.

Zojirushi 6 Cup Rice Cooker / Steamer Review

Zojirushi 6 Cup Rice Cooker / Steamer
Average Reviews:

I love my rice cookers. I use them not only to make rice, but for all sorts of one-pot meals. Put in a cup of rice, vegetables, meats or seafood, seasonings, tofu... and a half hour later you have a steaming hot one-pot meal. They're also good for pilafs and other grain dishes.
The Zojirushi and Panasonic units are all first rate, BUT you need to know a little something about cooking rice beyond what's in the poorly worded manuals.
Different rice takes different amounts of water. The long-grained rice Americans are used to should be cooked with 1-3/4 cup of water for each cup of rice. Japanese rice needs only 1-1/4 cup of water for each cup of rice, or 1 cup of water for each cup of washed, wet, rice.
Many Americans (and Europeans) have problems with these cookers because the measure ments are calibrated for Japanese short grain rice, and the Westerners are cooking long grain rice. Get the ratios correct, and everything works out fine.
I've had a number of rice cookers of different sizes. My Panasonic has lasted over 20 years, and my Zojirushi looks like it'll last just as long, while my South Bend gave up the ghost after only a year. Go with the top Japanese models; they're made for day-in and day out cooking.

Zojirushi NS-ZCC18 10-Cup Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker and Warmer, Premium White Review

Average Reviews:

Excellent rice cooker. So far, I've used it for white and brown rice with and without the automatic timer and it works great. I'll use it for shushi next week. With the automatic timer feature you set up the machine and then tell the rice cooker the time of day when you want your rice to be ready. After that time it switches automatically into 'keep warm' mode so your rice is ready to eat in case you're delayed. This is one of the main reasons I bought this specific model.
A few things to note so you can make a more informed purchase.
1- Cup size is different. I guess a japanese cup is different than those used in the US. Therefore, 10 cups in this case actually translates to 7.5 US-sized cups of rice.
2- Cooking time is longer than 'normal'. I included the estimates for some types of rice straight from the manual. The zojirushi website also has estimates.
a- Quick cooking (only white rice): 35-45 min
b- White Rice: 51-60 min
c- Sushi rice: 47-58 mn
d- Brown rice: 82-108
3- The minimum amount of rice you can make with the 10 cup model is 1 cup except for sweet, mixed, and brown rice where the minimum is 2 cups. Mixed rice is one where you ad a few other ingredients that will cook together with the rice 9eg. soup stock, soy sauce). For the 5 cup the minimum you can make is 1 cup for all types of rice except porridge where you can make 0.5 cups. Again, these are the smaller cup sizes.
4- For those with small kitchens, the 10 cup machine has the following dims (WxDxH in inches): 11x14.2x9.4. The 5 cup is 10x13x8.1
Enjoy perfect rice every time. Spend your time preparing other parts of your meal.

Average Reviews:

I bought this model to replace my $12 reject rice cooker. Clearly, a hundred bucks does make a bit of a difference, the most obvious and pleasing of which is the thick, non-stick cooking vessel. There are two that come with this appliance, a rice cooker with graduations for different kinds of rice, and a slow cooker, both non-stick. No more soaking with soap and attacking the pan with a scouring pad after every batch of rice. Being an electronic rice cooker, the other noteworthy advantages over its cheapo predecessor are the timer function and truly hands-off operation, which translates into more food being prepared at home. If it costs $8-10 to buy a modest lunch, and perhaps a dollar or so to prepare one in the cooker (which is likely more nutritious anyway,) the savings quickly add up. Using a device like this to prepare meals really saves time.
So far, I've cooked several flawless batches of brown rice, a process that the manufacturer has made near-absolutely idiot-proof. There's no point going into detail here--just read and follow the instructions and you'll get a nicely-made batch. I also used the high slow-cook setting to prepare some buckwheat, which came out fine, but the quicker rice-cooking modes will work equally well on buckwheat or other grains with some experimentation. Dig around online to find recipes. I look forward to making some soups with this thing.
Construction is typical for the Sanyo brand: solid and refined. Zojirushi appears to be the favored brand in this category for whatever reason, but the cheaper Sanyo offerings have the same features and careful attention to detail.

Sanyo ECJ-HC100S 10-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker Review

Sanyo ECJ-HC100S 10-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I come from south India, which means that I grew up eating rice every day. This also means that for me, rice is not just an important food, but a way of life. At any given time, you can expect to find five different kinds of rice in my pantry at all times (10 kg long grain white rice, 10 kg white sushi rice, 5 kg Basmati, 1 kg brown sushi, 5 kg long grain brown). I still eat rice every day, although the noodles, pasta, and bread are easy to find.
When I was young, my mother would by the typical rice cookers, where it would have a flimsy aluminium pot, a cheap electric part, and a cheap glass lid that didn't actually keep the moisture in. Measuring the water was a game of roulette, because although the rice always got cooked, variations in the moisture levels inside the cooking pot were bound to get wonky rather quickly. Furthermore, they never lasted too terribly long if you weren't extremely careful with them.
When I moved out on my own, I continued the tradition of getting the standard, cheap rice cookers. I was unwilling to spend this sort of money on a rice cooker. Until my third one fried out on me.
This model keeps rice piping hot, and tender, and fluffy, for three days. It cooks up the following rices perfectly (as in, I've tested it myself): Jasmine, White Basmati, Parboiled Basmati, Haiga-Mai, White Koshihikari, Brown Koshihikari, long grain Brown, and long grain White.
When using the slow cooker pot, I can churn out a pot of lentil soup quickly or slowly, depending on how much time I have on my hands. The tofu cycle works for the Indian dish known as idli. You end up with rather a large idli, but it's easy enough to cut up into four pieces. It makes steel cut oats in one hour flat, but makes sure that they're tender but not mushy. The minimum capacity is 2 cups, and the maximum is 10. It comes with a steaming basket to steam vegetables, however, I doubt that I'll be using it any time soon for steaming vegetables. What that basket is good for is a no-fuss Chinese dim sum steaming, without having to turn on the stove. Just set your buns down on the little steaming tray, and set your rice cooker to do the work for you. No poking around and watching the water levels for you!
The instructions are easy to follow: measure the dry rice with the provided cup, and then fill water to the line indicated on the inside of the pot, depending on the type of rice (or porridge, as needed). Also, get used to measuring the rice out exactly, because that will get you more consistent pots of rice, especially when you're working with unknown rices. There is no guesswork.
You will be cooking with less water, because the steam is contained inside the chamber, and not flying out into the air. In the last few minutes of cooking, you will notice a bit of steam being vented from the top, but that's minimal in comparison to how much steam is produced from a conventional rice cooker.
The rice pot is EXTREMELY nonstick. For easy cleanup, wait for the rice and the starch and the rest to dry out. Then wipe down the inside with your hand, and watch everything fall away like magic. Then, go ahead and wash as normal.
The plastic chassis is easy to clean with a soft cloth and a bit of water. Give it a wipe down after every use, and it'll look sparkling clean and beautiful there on your counter top.
Go buy this now if you're considering it. You won't regret it.
UPDATE: It's now January of 2011, and I bought this in September 2008. The rice cooker is still a work horse, and we've been using it if not every single day, pretty close to every single day. Pot after pot of perfect rice. Nonstick surface is still going strong.

I purchased this rice cooker after multiple attempts to learn to cook rice on the stovetop, :( I did alot of research before buying it, to the point I drove my girlfriend nuts). I don't think you can find another company out there who gets 5 star reviews an everything they make for your kitchen. Very high end appliances at affordable prices, check them out yourself. This cooker will cook 27 cups (thier cup which is about 3/4 cup USA measurements) even though the box says 10 cups (that is uncooked rice). It works flawlessly, is high quality, and has 2 stackable stainless steel (not plastic) steamer trays. This was a big deciding feature for me! You will not be disappointed in this purchase. I bought it at Bed Bath & Beyond because I always get those 20% off coupons on the mail, $51.70 final price. I WILL be buying Breville products in the future like thier WOK and indoor grill, also 5 star rated and now I know why! Purchased this rice cooker for my wife. We are both enjoying it a lot. The parts are solid and simply feel like high quality. There are two bowls. The rice cooking bowl has a better non-stick coating on it. The other bowl for non-rice cooking is easy enough to clean, but might take a little soaking for those challenging situations.
Selection is easy to understand. The slow-cook options are partially what sold me on this unit. You can cook so many things in this cooker, because you can manually cook instead of always having to follow a programmed option.
Rice can be kept warm up to 12 hours. It has a great sealing system, so it does stay fresh.
The unit looks very nice on the counter. The battery runs the clock, unless you keep the unit plugged into the outlet. The battery is suppose to run for 4 years or so.
Quality of rice cooked -- The rice has been PERFECT every time we have cooked rice. We are using a Jasmine rice bought from a local asian market. We simply wash the rice twice, put in the required amount of water, and set it to cook. So far it has been perfect each time.
I ended up buying this over the Zojirushi based on price and couldn't be happier. I saved maybe a $100 and am 100% happy with the product. We've been using this for 3 weeks now.
Cleaning is easy and fast. The removable lid/seal is great and easy to clean. It is not possible to latch the cover if the removable cover is not in place -- a nice feature and great engineering.
The steam collector works well. Be careful not to put your hand close to the exit hole as steam is not fully condensed coming out and could burn you. This is not really a safety concern for me and my wife. Cleaning the collector is not a problem so far. Simply remove and shake out the water. Any water dripping down is caught in a silicon seal. You can easily take a towl and soak up the very small amount of water that might drip out. It is only water and doesn't mess anything up.
I would buy this over again based on my experience so far. Can't speak about reliability yet. I can only hope Sanyo brand will be good. I don't usually buy their products.

Aroma ARC-838TC 8-Cup Digital Rice Cooker & Food Steamer Review

Aroma ARC-838TC 8-Cup Digital Rice Cooker and Food Steamer

This is the fourth rice cooker I have owned and it is by far and away the best. The rice cooks right every time. The manual does give a guide of how much water to add for different types of rice but I have found that even when I screw up and do not use the right amount of water the rice has turned out pretty good.
I enjoy the fact that the device has a sealed top which really seems to help the rice be more consistent and also makes me feel better having this unit used with three small children in the house running around. The rice receptacle inside is a delightful non-stick surface that is more then easy to clean. The steam feature for other items works wonderful as well. I have left rice in the device for over two hours after cooking and it is still moist, tasty and not burnt. The one touch button cooking is a breeze and for me it takes about 30 minutes or so in most instances for the quantity I cook.
The only thing I learned I had to do is not place the device under anything when cooking. There is a starchy steam that is released during cooking that can coat wood and other surfaces. On wood this starch coating can be a pain to remove.
This is a great device to cook an entire meal or side in quick mindless ease. I can't think of a feature I would change on this unit. A great device that actually has increased the amount of rice and vegetables I and my family consume. Unless you need larger quantities of rice then this device is capable of I really can't see why anyone would need anything else. This is a great product at a great price. Wonderful!

Black & Decker 3 Cups Uncooked Yields 6 Cups Cooked, Rice Cooker Review

Black and Decker 3 Cups Uncooked Yields 6 Cups Cooked, Rice Cooker

I am very impressed with this rice cooker. Many of the reviews for other brands were not very encouraging. I thought that Black and Decker has never let me down, so I gave it a shot. I measure exactly as directed on the instructions and the rice comes out perfect. I even substitute broth for the water and add my own blends of spices based on my cravings that particular evening. The cleanup is fantastic. I am going to buy one for my daughter and grandson this Christmas. We have used this cooker about 12 times now and the results are consistent. Please note the smaller size of this unit if you cook very large amounts of rice at one time.
** I have now owned this cooker for 7 months and am still amazed at how well it works. It remains so easy to clean up even after using it about 2-3 times per week. It has always produced perfect rice. And, that is even when I add lots of different items for a variety of rice dishes.

Oster 4722 3-Cups Uncooked/6-Cup Cooked Rice Cooker with Steaming Tray, Red Review

I've never owned a rice cooker before this, however, I have cooked lots of rice over the years. Its an inexpensive rice cooker and if you follow the directions, it'll do fine.
Since moving to the mountains of Colorado, its taken me years to adjust to the lowered the boiling point due to the higher elevation (8300')... it takes more time (add ~10-20min) and the dry climate means using more water (for a 1 cup of dry rice, takes ~2.5+ cups water rather than 2cups). Still, there have been many times when rice just didn't work out the way I wanted.
So I mentioned that it would be nice to have a rice cooker and let it deal with the cook time. Of course I had done some research, and when this came in the mail as a present, I was a little nervous since Oster's seem to get so-so reviews. Well, I cooked my typical basmati rice, a 1/2 cup dry and added my typical 1c water plus extra, put lid on, pressed the button and went to do something else.
A lot of reviewers mention how the rice on the bottom gets over-cooked, sometimes brown or burnt. Some reviewers like the crunchiness, some hate it. Well, the directions tell you to stir the rice - especially the bottom of the cooker after 15 minutes. Sure enough, the rice at the bottom was starting to stick. I scraped it all loose, added another 1/4 cup water, chopped it up a little, put the lid on, and let fate take its course. Would the rice by a burnt mess? 20 minutes later we had the best sticky rice we've ever had!
Plus it seemed to cook faster. And I really liked that it went to 'warm' mode automatically. One major drawback: It spewed hot sticky water up under the lid and through the vent all over the kitchen but once we wiped the lid off (without picking up the lid), it settled down. If you are a neat freak or want a set-and-forgot, this rice cooker is not for you. And for me, I'll come up with a little steam catcher helmet and deal with the mess. For the price, its a good buy. And, I love the red color too!
[found this cool tip from Spyce: To help keep the starch from bubbling up and spraying out of the vent hole, rinse the rice thoroughly and drain. Heat a small amount of olive oil in the rice bowl, once the oil is heated, carefully add the rice and saute it for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the water and continue cooking.] I'm going to try this tip next time!
BTW, this cooker seems like a knock-off of the similar Rival rice cooker (both owned by Jarden]
