I'm a tomato fiend and eat a few pounds of tomatoes a week. I am very fussy about my tomatoes. Last summer, I discovered the Cherokee Purples when my boyfriend decided to grow them.
They have a full-bodied rich flavor that you expect from a large heirloom grown in the south, but it's the aftertaste that's sets these so far above the rest.... there is a hint of smokey flavor. Almost as if you can taste the aroma added from a nearby BBQ grill (even if there wasn't one). It's hard to imagine until you try it, but believe me, these were the best tomatoes I'd ever had.
Large, very juicy, and full of flavor.
If you want something that'll make your recipes soar far above anyone else's at the party, or that will set your heart spinning with joy, this is the tomato to grow.
My boyfriend found them fairly easy to grow too, it was his first attempt at gardening and they turned out amazingly well. I think the fruit was produced a little later in the season than his romas, but before his yellow tomatoes. These were far tastier than any other variety I've grown myself, or tried from any other local grower.
I can hardly imagine how good they'd be from an experienced gardener.
