Professional Greenhouse Kit Review

Professional Greenhouse Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Other reviewers have rated the product poorly based on the ridiculously high price. While it is true that this kit can be had for under $6 elsewhere (I bought mine at Home Depot for about $5), the product is excellent and some comments should be made about that.
This product is *identical* to other greenhouse kits sold on Amazon under the names "Carefree Jiffy Greenhouse", "Ferry-Morse Seed #5272 Pro Greenhouse Kit", and perhaps there are others floating about with different names and prices. Indeed unusual but nevertheless they are all the same.
You get (72) peat disks, each clad in a fine biodegradable netting, in an 11" x 22" plastic tray. A clear plastic lid is included. Add (2) quarts of warm water, the disks expand, pencil-push your seeds in, blanket the seeds with peat harvested from the pellets, lid the tray and place in indirect sunlight until the seedlings grow about 2", move outside and prop open the lid in partial sun, then transplant in about a week or less.
I've been using this for vegetables -- everything from tomatoes, beans, corn, pumpkins, even carrots (snipping off the bottom pellet mesh with a scissor before transplanting). Everything grows well and fast and, for me, it's more determinate and satisfying than sowing seeds directly into the soil.
The plastic is recyclable -- #1 or #2, I think -- so either dispose of responsibly or keep reusing (as I do) by purchasing bundles of the pellets which are cheap and sold separately.
On a final note, if one wanted to replicate the kit themselves it would be quite easy. The "internals" of the Jiffy kit are the aforementioned plastic tray which has (2) parts -- a 2" deep tray and a lightly perforated rectangle of plastic with circular depressions for the disks seated inside. When the water is added the internal tray raises and floats. You could use an ordinary baking pan for the external tray and non-cardboard egg cartons with a few tiny holes punched in the bottom. Roll and pack small balls of peat and wrap each in thin cheesecloth. Place the balls in the egg cartons and snip an opening on the top to place the seeds. Cover the tray with clear plastic wrap. Transplant the balls.

AeroGarden 2101-00S Classic 7-Pod with Gourmet Herb Seed Kit, Silver Review

AeroGarden 2101-00S Classic 7-Pod with Gourmet Herb Seed Kit, Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a remarkable device, one that is a boon to apartment dwellers with no patch of garden, or to anyone who wants an indoor garden that's nearly foolproof.I have to say, I have probably a "black thumb." I can grow aloe plants really well, pothos (ubiquitous viney house plant) and I once had a good crop of morning glories but normally, my gardening efforts are pretty sad. I don't trust myself to keep an outdoor herb garden growing.
But I like to cook with fresh herbs, and I got really tired of trying to find chervil, let alone keeping basil and mint from going all black and soft in the fridge. After reading a lot of discussion about the Aerogrow and seeing a tempting sale, I decided to spring for one and try it out.The device is a rounded vessel that holds a pump and water, and a light attached at the top. The surface of the lower vessel has a stainless steel plate with seven wells. You put plastic seed pods in these wells, cover with plastic "bio-domes" and add tablets of nutrient and let 'er rip. The pump feeds the foam in the plug where seeds are embedded. The light encourages the seedlings. Within weeks, you have a crop of various herbs or lettuce or flowers. The "razor blade" of this device is the seed pod. It is a specially designed unit, like a small plastic frame rather like a thimble. It holds foam plastic, split in two. Inside the split, the manufacturer places some seeds and puts a paper collar with the name of the herb on top. The collar serves also to support the plant as it grows taller. The other "razor blade" is the grow bulb, which needs replacing after some months because lights grow dimmer as they are used. Eventually, the grow light is too weak to do its job and you need a replacement. I say "razor blade" because these disposables are unique to the unit and you must purchase them from retailers who sell Aerogarden products. There are master gardener kits with special pods you can use to insert your own seeds--probably a great idea for gardeners who need to get a real jump on the growing season, such as folks in New England where the season can be as short as 60 days.I tried three kits so far: first, I used the gourmet herb kit. This had two types of basil (purple and green), mint, parsley, cilantro, dill and chives. I got a great crop of basil. Enough to share some baggies of this essential herb with my assistant at work. I got a bumper crop of dill, plenty of chives for breakfasts of omelets, and eventually, some viney mint that seems to be of the apple mint variety. Not enough to do tabbouleh salad, but enough to use in drinks and garnish fruits. Only the cilantro failed to grow. No seed even showed a sprout. I called the support number, and very polite folks immediately sent me a replacement and noted they felt it would take more than four weeks to sprout cilantro. Now, some of the herbs are slow to grow (parsley is notoriously slow) but neither pod ever showed a ghost of cilantro. I assume that the seeds supplied to the company might have been mistakenly irradiated food-grade spice seeds and not fresh crop growing seeds. In any case, I got absolutely nowhere with cilantro, a shame, as that is a very tender herb that doesn't keep well. The parsley grew too slowly to be of any real use, as well. But it did grow.I eventually depotted the herbs into a kitchen flower pot (cutting off the plastic frame and leaving on the foam, into which the roots had really made a home.) Then I tried the lettuce. It sprouted in three days and in a month, I had enough to make some light salads and yes, share a bag with the assistant. But it seemed a waste to let the Aerogarden grow something as mundane as lettuce, and I prefer mache (cornsalad, feldsalat) or arugula to leaf lettuce, so I harvested the rest of the crop and started the French Herb kit. This is chervil, sorrel, parsley, chives, Marseilles basil, sage and savory. Everything sprouted immediately except the parsley and chervil, notable slow-pokes of the herb world. I sure like having fresh herbs to hand on the kitchen counter. I can even see the attraction of having three or these mounted on an optional wall rack, but that is quite a luxury. However, a determined gourmet or gardener in a harsh climate or restrictive living setting could satisfy their green thumb with such an arrangement. The customer support is fast and friendly. I have heard stories of failed pumps but mine is quite reliable, and I did have a light give up the ghost way early, and this was cheerfully replaced by customer service. The unit is attractive, easy to use (hey, my black thumb has yet to deter the Aerogarden) and it is a lot of fun to watch the plants grow taller and taller. I'd say this is a great idea for kids as well as cooks who like fresh herbs. As to the other kits, there are a number of them and more are being made available. I can purchase them at my local farmstand-garden shop and that's quite handy. Of course they are also available online. The kits so far that I know of are the French Herb, Gourmet Herb and Lettuce I mentioned and:
Japanese Herb--two colors of shiso, mitsuba, chives, shungiku and cress
South of the Border: Epazote, cilantro, oregano, thyme, parsley, basil
Year Round Gourmet Herb (extra herbs like savory, sage, lemon basil, and the ones in the regular gourmet kit)
Holiday Herb (parsley, sage, oregano, thyme)
International Basil
Italian Herb
Cascading Petunia
Cherry Tomato
Salsa Garden
Beans
Snow Peas
Chili Peppers
More greens (arugula, mesclun, baby greens, chef pack, romaine)And I assume more packs are in the works. All come with nutrient tablets and complete instructions. I give this two (greenish) thumbs up.

10" Fabric Pond-Pot Review

10 Fabric Pond-Pot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These pots are very sturdy. I use the 15 gallon size to grow potatoes in. The 10" pot is great for herbs. They are lightweight and very simple to use. They look attractive in my yard. My yard is slightly sloped but these adapt to the slope where a hard container would not. When I'm finished using them they fold up and store away very easily. The plants roots are aerated and this pot has good drainage. They are a great value as well. [...]Gardener's supply sells the 15 gallon size under the name "potato bin". I personally could care less if the seam is white. It's not that noticeable IMHO.

Felknor Ventures FV504C Topsy Turvy Upside-Down Hanging Tomato Planter Review

Felknor Ventures FV504C Topsy Turvy Upside-Down Hanging Tomato Planter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I AM AMENDING MY REVIEW AND OFFERING A MEA CULPA TO ANYONE WHO HAS BOUGHT ONE OF THESE IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS. I DO STAND BY THE IDEA AND HAVE HAD GREAT SUCCESS FOR MANY SEASONS BUT APPARENTLY THE POPULARITY AND THE FLOODING OF THE MARKET WITH THESE HAS GIVEN THE MAKERS CAUSE TO DRASTICALLY REDUCE THE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT. I BOUGHT FOUR THIS SEASON AND HAVE HAD THE CABLES BREAK, EVEN AS I WAS PLANTING TWO OF THEM. ALSO, THE ACCESSORIES LIKE THE FOAM INSERTS THAT HOLD THE PLANT HAVE DECREASED FROM ONE INCH TO A MERE QUARTER OF AN INCH AND EVEN THAT IS SUCH INFERIOR QUALITY THAT THE PLANT BULGES OUT FROM THE NOW SHALLOWER CUP MEANT TO HOLD IT. THERE USED TO BE TWO FOAM DISCS THE WIDTH OF THE PLANTER TO BE PLACED AT INTERVALS IN THE SOIL TO SLOW DOWN EVAPORATION AND KEEP THE WATER FROM RUNNING RIGHT THROUGH - - - NOT ANYMORE.
IN ADDITION, THE LIDS ARE ILL FITTING, THE PLASTIC LINER IS MUCH LESS DURABLE AND ARE NOT ATTACHED WELL TO THE PLASTIC FRAME OR THE TOP WIRE RING. THE REASON THAT I AM NOT DELETING THE PREVIOUS REVIEW IS BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT JUST A "SOUR GRAPES" OPINION. THEY JUST AREN'T WORTH BUYING ANYMORE. ---- MAY 28, 2009
I thought that this would just be a fun conversation starter when people visited my garden - it is so much more! This product far exceeds the description in the ad.
The inverse orientation seems to encourage hearty plants - super strong stems requiring no staking - so many tomatoes that I'll be giving them away by the bushel - BEST of all the bugs don't seem to notice it is even there (and the rabbits can't reach it). After the severe rains this past Spring the whole rest of my garden is bogged down with mold, mildew and more insects than I have ever seen but the hanging tomato garden is thriving and pest free. The only access a crawly creature would have would be the wire that it hangs from (a much more clever design than the expensive 'Upside-down Tomato Garden' ($69.97) that is in actual contact with the ground and besides, that one has to be put together).
Make sure that your plant 'starts' are a good five or six inches tall before they go into the planter and be consistent with the water (about a gallon each day) tomatoes are heavy drinkers.
Have fun watching your whacky garden grow!

Whether there isn\'t enough space at the apartment for a garden plot, or whether you\'re just tired of bending over to cultivate tomatoes, the upside-down tomato planter makes it easy to water, feed, trim and harvest without bending or kneeling. Thanks to this whole new direction in growing tomatoes, crops are bigger, better tasting, healthier, and easier to grow than ever before. And, since the crop is upside down and will never touch the ground, staking, caging, bacteria, ground rotting, fungus and small animals are no longer a problem. The perfect gift for any gardener and great for those who live in apartments or who have small backyards, the planter lets you water and fertilize through the built-in top funnel, and trim and harvest at comfortable chest height! It\'s also great for growing cucumbers, peppers, and flowers. Best of all, setting up is easy. Just add soil and plants, then fertilize. Hang it from a hook on a deck or balcony and you\'re you\'ll be adding color and juicy tomatoes to salads, sandwiches, soups and more in no time.

Jiffy 5605 Seed Starting Mix - 4 Quart Bag Review

Jiffy 5605 Seed Starting Mix - 4 Quart Bag
Average Reviews:

I bought these because I have used the plugs, and the plugs have worked out really well in the past. This stuff, however, doesn't hold water.. which is sort of essential for plants. it seems to evaporate, or get sucked up into the jiffy pot and evaporates. I'd recommend the plugs if you have one of those plastic jiffy greenhouses instead. I can't believe they even sell this stuff.

This greenhouse tray is good for starting seeds indoors prior to the planting season. This specific product (Jiffy product #5029) includes a black plastic tray with clear plastic lid, as well as 50 "strips", which are little peat pots that you can plant right into the ground.
I like this better than other similar sets because it lets me use my own soil.

Hydrofarm JSV2 2-Foot Jump Start T5 Grow Light System Review

Hydrofarm JSV2 2-Foot Jump Start T5 Grow Light System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered the JSV2 2' grow light jump start system and it arrived pretty quickly and set up was a breeze. All you really need is a screw driver and common sense. I put it together in about 10 minutes and the pully system for the light comes already assembled and works great.
It also comes with a 24 watt T5 6400k High output fluorescent bulb which is already installed upon arrival. The 6400k bulb is a very efficient low heat bulb which is designed to promote overall growth in the plant. Because it is a low heat emitting bulb you can place the light source a couple inches from the plants to prevent the loss of light.
This is not a complex system, it is simple and efficient. For the price it would be hard to find a package which comes with a stand, a reflective fixture, a good bulb, easy adjustment, and easy assembly. It is a good first step into the grow light world which is vast and and many times confusing. I also found that it isn't really that flimsy. The product isn't industrial grade but the light fixture is sturdy and so is the stand if you put it together correctly.
I will be growing venus fly traps when they arrive and I have researched grow light systems quite a bit. This system will only cost me $1.50 cents to run per month. The calculation can be done by taking the 24 Watts and dividing it by 1000 to get KW. Then multiply that number by how much the electric company charges per Kilowatt hour. That is the price it will cost to power the light for one hour. Then multiply that number for one hour by however many hours you will run it during the day. Then just multiply the cost of one day by 30 days and you have how much it will cost you to run the system for a month.
For example here is mine 24W/1000 = .024
.024 x .1484 (cost per kWh) = .0035616 cents per hour (less than 1 cent an hour). .0035616 x 14 hours = .0498624 dollars per day (about 5 cents). .0498624 x 30 = 1.50 per month. So my light run for 14 hours will cost one dollar and fifty cents per month. This is assuming that the light runs at 24 Watts per hour.
When I was shopping for grow lights online I found a very helpful website that includes a much better description on the Jump Start grow light and has a lot of technical and very helpful information on plant lighting. littlegreenhouse.com/accessory/lights2.shtml#jsfixture.
The website has a grow lighting guide and also contains the calculation above. It was by far the most helpful website when considering this purchase. It includes a good bit of information about the T5 6400k bulb and the Jump Start from HydroFarm.
