Food Mill, Stainless Steel Food Grinder, 5.75 Inch Diameter Review

We got this as an alternative to a plastic mill for grinding up our infant son's food. Thus far we have tried to grind up a banana and an apple in this mill with no success. We may have put it together wrong, but I doubt it because it doesn't seem to be a complicated piece of machinery. Also, if it is complicated and we did put it together wrong, then it might be a good idea for the company to include instructions. Big disappointment but not worth the two and from shipping to return it. Instead, we're out about $30 and are now using a $12.99 plastic food grinder that works better and is smaller.

KitchenAid Professional Cheese/Food Mill Review

KitchenAid Professional Cheese/Food Mill

Bought one of these in my search for a good cheese grater to replace my sadly inadequate KitchenAid KG301 rotary model (see reviews on this before buying...they capture the problems well). After using this once, you have to ask: "what were they thinking?" The cutting disks can fit into the device both ways though only one way cuts, the disk is difficult to line up properly in the unit, and frankly doesn't cut well with my main use for parmigiano reggiano...it almost powders it. Worse, the circular hand motion needed to grate is fine for, say, a pepper mill for which only a small amount is needed. For this, the repetitive twisting and small yield are unacceptable.
For those of you like me who have and love the superb and unbeaten KitchenAid stand mixers, this device and the rotary grater are not in anywhere near the same quality and usefulness league.
Another cheese grater of no value to me.

Electric Food Mill Review

This does a great job of converting small to medium quantities of food into a consistency that is perfect for our 6 month old daughter. We had used the hand crank thing but that was a pain. This is also preferable to a blender because when preparing smaller quantities as the results are more uniform and there is less lost to the equipment.
My only reservation was the comment about the lack of an on/off switch. I was about to run to the hardware store (quick as a bunny) and buy one to add to the line cord. However my wife, no stranger to a kitchen, pointed out that this food mill works just like... a food mill. It only goes on when you place the motor housing on top of the container *and* press down. That is the on/off switch. Adding something else would only make the thing more difficult to operate than it needs to be. In fact, we leave the motor housing plugged in all the time. When it's our daughter's dinner time we fill the container with stuff, set the housing on top of the container, and press down. A few seconds later we have a nourishing and freshly made meal for her. (We usually make a little extra and add it to our dog's food because she likes it too.)
As we go through our parenting journey we are learning there are certain essentials and this, ioho, is one of them.

Mirro Foley 2-Quart Stainless Steel Food Mill Review

Mirro Foley 2-Quart Stainless Steel Food Mill

I replaced my original 35 year old Foley Mill with the new model. On the plus side, it is greatly improved by the fact it is now made in stainless stain. On the minus side, the handle is no longer solid but rather an "open" handle and I find it now difficult to hold. If the new handle would not be a problem for anyone else, than I would give it 5 stars.

Oxo 1071478 Good Grips Food Mill Review

We do a lot of home canning and preserving and purchased this mill to help with some of the chores associated with putting away pumpkin butter, grape butter, pumpkin puree and other foods. This was the only tool we found that helped get rid of the seeds and save the pulp of the grapes for our grape spread. We also own one of the large food strainers (Victorio or Roma type model) and this did a better job than that large, expensive strainer for that kind of work.
Things I really like:
--the "legs" of the strainer on the pot are coated with a rubberized surface that helps to keep them from slipping off the edge of the pot you are using it over. The handle seems to have the same coating and is pleasant to hold.
--also with the legs, they fold for storage, but I have found that folding them down around the sides of a 4-cup pyrex measuring cup also helps to hold it stable while using it.
--I like the white enamel (I think that's what it is) coating on the outside of the pot. Very attractive.
--Easy to clean. If I clean this immediately after using, I can practically just rinse it in hot water and let it dry and it looks great.
--handle assembly is cleverly designed and feels sturdy and secure when using it.
--comes with 3 disks for different jobs. We use the most coarse disk for pumpkin and apples and it works beautifully. (Note, we do take the seeds out of our pumpkins before cooking and straining). We used the medium disk with our grapes this year and it did a nice job, but a few seeds did sneak through. Next year we will try the fine disk.
My ONLY quibble with this piece of equipment is that it is not bigger. As I mentioned above, it fits nicely over a 4-cup pyrex measuring cup. I'd be thrilled if it was larger. The pot itself probably doesn't hold more than 4 cups. You *can* use it over a large pot, the legs will simply hold it there for you. It's the size of the pot itself I am talking about.
